The Alexandria Water and Drainage Company participates in the World Earth Day celebration at the Faculty of Science, Alexandria University
The two drinking water and sanitation companies in Alexandria participated in the celebration of World Earth Day by the Faculty of Science - Alexandria University, which was organized by the Faculty of Science, Alexandria University, headed by Dr. Amani Ismail, Dean of the Faculty, and which was held under the slogan “Extreme climate phenomena and the challenges of sustainable development” to indicate the sequential effects of extreme phenomena. And its implications for sustainable development goals, talking about energy and climate change between the present and the future, and emphasizing that development does not conflict with environmental protection, but rather enhances it for the sake of a better life for everyone on planet Earth.
Engineer Ahmed Gaber, head of the Alexandria Drinking Water Company, confirmed that the company had a pioneering role in this field, as it established a department to study the impact of climate change on water quality, which is affiliated with the General Administration for Research and Development, as well as establishing the first unit to measure air pollutants at the level of companies affiliated with the holding company.
He said that this comes from the close connection between water and the environment, and that one of the company's goals is to preserve its water resources from pollution, and to monitor the quality of water production in all its stages, starting from the intake until it reaches the citizen.
Major General Mahmoud Nafie, head of the Sanitation Company in Alexandria, stressed the importance of spreading environmental culture to preserve natural resources that are scarce year after year, and that the state’s efforts are relentless in exploiting all resources, reusing them safely, and achieving sustainable development goals to achieve a good standard of life for all citizens.
He pointed out that the features and effects of climate change have become clear, such as water resources, increased rainfall intensity, sea level rise, and sharp changes in temperature.
He emphasized the role of awareness campaigns to spread environmental awareness, especially among all members of society, about climate change and its negative effects and how to reduce them.
The events included a special program for school students under the title “Environment for All” to present artistic works to school students. The activities concluded with an exhibition of the college’s achievements, an exhibition of companies participating in the celebration, and an exhibition for school students and the Children’s University.
